Dr. Yasir Javed, PhD is currently working as an Assistant Professor in Department of Management Science, COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Abbottabad, Pakistan. Dr. Javed holds a Bachelors of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) from the same University in 2006. During his final year of BSIT, in 2005, a devastating earthquake struck Northern areas of Pakistan. He joined the relief efforts during the recovery phase for an initial three months. Afterwards, Javed worked in the field with various International NGOs and the Pakistan Army as a volunteer MIS Manager to collect data for reporting on the rebuilding of damaged homes. The project was very successful and got approx 400,000 records of reconstructed homes, which was later used by the Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA), Pakistan for monitoring and reporting purposes. It was these experiences that inspired him to work with the technology in disaster management and to advance his education in the same area. After receiving doctoral scholarship from Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan, he started his PhD in February, 2009 at the Institute of Information and Mathematical Sciences (IIMS), Massey University, Auckland, New Zealand. His PhD research focused on the design and use of Information System (IS) for improved coordination and decision making in rapidly changing emergency situations.
Javed, has also carried out research on the role of long-term local community recovery planning in disaster management, with reference to the Northern areas of Pakistan affected by the 2005 earthquake. He also conducted an impact assessment of proactive approaches towards safety & accident prevention in disaster management scenarios. JAved is currently working with an international NGO to measure the impact of using ICT in Non-Formal Basic Education Centers in Pakistan. Recently, he presented a research paper on using sensor networks for crowd control and emergency management in mass gatherings.
