CLACS Engaged Course Grants

CLACS invites applications from affiliated faculty or groups of faculty to develop engaged courses with the support of the Center for academic year 18-19. The Center will award up to $4,000 (total) for one or more initiatives that will support the development of community-engaged courses and related programming for students who are interested in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Eligible proposals will develop courses that link traditional academic study with community-engaged learning experiences, including off-campus practica.

Requests of up to $4,000 will be accepted. Up to $1,000 may be used to support programming such as lectures and events for the course. Compensation for the faculty member(s) in the form of a summer salary (benefits are deducted from the stipend in this case) will also be considered.

Proposals are due to Kate_Goldman@brown.edu by February 28, 2018, and must include the following:

  • One-paragraph description of the course indicating its relationship to each applicant’s own research and discipline.
  • A brief email of support from the faculty member’s chair stating that the course could potentially be scheduled during fall 2018 or spring 2019, and that it could potentially be offered at least once more in the subsequent three years.
  • If the faculty member has already established a relationship with a community organization, a note of support from the organization may be included.
  • Brief requested budget.

Please note that faculty who have received funding from the Swearer Center through the Engaged Scholars Program for development of the same initiative are not eligible to apply for these funds.
