Academic Programs

The Watson Institute houses several undergraduate, graduate, professional development, and post-doctoral programs. In keeping with Watson's mission, the programs offer students an interdisciplinary, self-directed comparative approach to support and foster innovative, policy-relevant scholarly activities.

The Watson Institute administers three undergraduate degree-granting programs that provide students with the resources, knowledge, and skills necessary to be engaged, global citizens.

The Watson Institute houses a unique one-year Master of Public Affairs (MPA) program and the Graduate Program in Development that supports the training and research of Brown PhD candidates. These two programs encompass the Institute's commitment to small classes, interdisciplinary studies, global outreach, and professional and research experience.

The Institute is home to a postdoctoral fellows program in its core research areas: security, development, and governance. Each fall, we invite applications from exceptional early career scholars from across the social sciences whose work contributes to one or more of these research areas.

Global Outreach

Global Outreach

The Brown International Advanced Research Institutes (BIARI) is an early-career professional development initiative for scholars and practitioners that aims to build transnational knowledge networks. Through intensive residential institutes and alumni opportunities, BIARI brings emerging leaders from the Global South and the Santander Universities network together to address the world's major challenges.

Pre-College Education

The Choices Program is a national education program that develops curriculum resources for the secondary level and offers professional development to classroom teachers. Its mission is to equip young people with the skills, habits, and knowledge necessary to be engaged citizens who are capable of addressing international issues with thoughtful public discourse and informed decision making.
