Anthropology & PSTC Present: Michele Friedner – Love and Disability Otherworlds in Urban India

Friday, April 20, 2018

12 p.m. – 2 p.m.

Giddings House 212, Department of Anthropology, 128 Hope Street, Providence, RI

The Department of Anthropology and the Population Studies and Training Center present Michele Friedner, Assistant Professorof Comparative Development at the University of Chicago. Friedner, a social and medical anthropologist, considers disability studies scholars' investment in "the social" as a site of rehabilitation and recuperation in order to argue that "anonymous love" is the modality through which the public often engages with disability. She explores how disability in modern India is associated with a publicity, or social presence, animated by love and argues for the limits of "the social" in disability analysis.
