Drawing from mid nineteenth-century newspaper crônicas and medical pamphlets on European immigrants’ uncertain acclimatization in miasmatic (toxic) Rio’s inner city, Sonia Roncador's talk challenges these immigrants’ “unconditional whiteness,” and ultimately proposes to revise the paradigm of whitening framing discourses of immigration in Brazil.
