Nirupama Rao is a former career diplomat who served in the Indian Foreign Service from 1973-2011. She retired as India’s Foreign Secretary and also served as the Indian Ambassador to the United States and to China. She was the first woman spokesperson of the Indian foreign ministry, and India’s first woman ambassador to the People’s Republic of China.
Ambassador Rao is writing a diplomatic history of the relations between India and China from 1949 to 1962 to be published by Penguin India. She is a frequent contributor to leading Indian newspapers on Indian foreign policy issues and the role of India in the world.
