The 2018 PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grant awards grants of $2,000–$4,000 to promote the publication and reception of translated world literature in English. The Translation Fund, now celebrating its fifteenth year, received 177 applications this year from a wide array of languages of origin, genres, and time periods. From this field of applicants, the Fund’s Advisory Board has selected 12 projects, spanning 13 different languages, including Japanese, Arabic, Korean, Farsi/Persian, Yiddish, and more.

Emily Drumsta is a 2018 recipient for her translation of Revolt Against the Sun: The Selected Poetry and Prose of Nazik al-Malaika, by Iraqi poet Nazik al-Malaika, best known according to Drumsta “for the important role she played in the development and spread of Arabic “free verse” (or taf‘ila poetry) in the 1940s and 50s.”
