Curriculum writers Andrew Blackadar and Sarah Massey, and videographer Tanya Waldburger, of the Institute-based Choices Program, received the Franklin Buchanan Prize from the Association for Asian Studies. The prize was awarded for their curriculum unit on The United States in Afghanistan, published in September 2011. Designed for secondary-school social studies classrooms, the curriculum integrates primary source documents, readings and media to encourage students to consider the future of US policy in Afghanistan. The Buchanan Award is awarded annually to recognize an outstanding curriculum publication on Asia designed for any educational level, elementary through university.
