Why baby formula is the new iron ore

November 12, 2015 The Sydney Morning Herald

Emily Oster, associate professor of economics, explores gaps in research claims that breastfed babies have advantages in cognitive development over formula fed babies. Such claims are "overblown," said Oster who recently wrote an article titled "Everybody needs to calm down about breastfeeding." Socioeconomic status is also linked to better outcomes for infants, so "This makes it very difficult to infer the actual causal effect of breastfeeding," Oster explains.
