According to a Department of Justice official, framework to clarify how private companies can carry out information security research while complying with the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, is gaining traction. Senior Fellow Timothy Edgar likes the idea, saying it's "a good first step but it doesn't really define criminal conduct narrowly enough to give a real binding effect in the way that revising the law would."
