Biography

Romano Prodi, former prime minister of Italy, is a Brown University professor at large. In addition to serving two terms as Italy's prime minister, he has served as president of the European Commission, among other official positions. He is also a distinguished scholar, having served as professor of industrial organization and industrial policy at the University of Bologna's Faculty of Political Science. Prodi earned economics and law degrees from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan.

Among Prodi's many publications are Governare l'Italia, Manifesto per il cambiamento; L'Italia che vogliamo; Il capitalismo ben temperato; and Un'idea dell'Europa (English ed. Blackwell/Polity, Oxford, 2000).

Italy’s La Stampa recently reported on former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi’s lectures this semester as Brown professor at large, echoing his themes on the fragility of Europe and the potential benefits of immigration to the European Union. “Somebody has to take responsibility for unpopular decisions and be courageous,” Prodi is quoted as saying in the article.

Transatlantic Project Reviews Shifting Global Migration

A recent high-level panel explored the social, political, and economic implications of the increasingly fluid wave of global migration, as part of the Transatlantic Dialogues at Brown. Moderated by Ignacio Polanco, president of the Madrid-based PRISA Group of media companies, the speakers discussed the flow of peoples between the Global South and Global North, and also within the regions.

Former Heads of State Discuss 'the Next Left' in the Global Economy

Three former leaders of Italy, Austria, and Chile, who have all led progressive parties and movements in their long public careers, discussed the future of the “Next Left” at the Watson Institute this week. Former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi was joined on Tuesday’s public panel by former president of Chile, Ricardo Lagos, and ex-chancellor of Austria, Alfred Gusenbauer. All three are currently visiting professors at Brown.
