Vivek Dehejia & Praveen Chakravarty — From the 'Idea of India' to the 'New Idea of India': The Political Economy of Federalism in India

Praveen Chakravarty is a Visiting Senior Fellow at IDFC Institute. Chakravarty’s focus is empirical research using diverse datasets for policy outcomes. It encompasses fields of political economy using electoral data and issues of public policy in finance and macro economics. His work has been published in all mainstream publications in India. He writes a popular monthly column titled "Noise to Signal" in BloombergQuint. Chakravarty previously served as Managing Director of Thomas Weisel Partners in the US and BNP Paribas India. He is a member of the Primary Markets committee of the Securities & Exchange Board of India and an Independent Director in the TVS Group of companies in Chennai. He also co-founded Mumbai Angels in 2006, India’s largest angel investing group. He has been an investor and mentor to several successful, innovative startups.Chakravarty also worked with the Unique Identity Authority of India (UIDAI) and was involved in UIDAI’s pilot of a Direct Benefits Transfer initiative in Jharkhand. Subsequently, he worked as an advisor to the National Skills Development Agency (NSDA). Chakravarty is the Founding Trustee of IndiaSpend, India’s first non-profit data journalism initiative. He is a board member of Centre for Civil Society, a private think-tank and Vice President of the Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha in Chennai, one of India’s oldest performing arts clubs. He is an avid tennis player and a former cricketer. Chakravarty holds an MBA from The Wharton School and an undergraduate degree from BITS Pilani.

Dr. Vivek Dehejia is Resident Senior Fellow in Political Economy at IDFC Institute. Dr. Dehejia is also Associate Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada and Columnist, Mint. He holds a PhD in Economics (1995) from Columbia University in New York, where his thesis supervisors included the Nobel laureate Robert Mundell and the noted international trade economist Jagdish Bhagwati. Dr. Dehejia is also co-author of "Indianomix: Making Sense of Modern India" (Random House India, 2012, republished in paperback 2015).
