Professor Varshney in The New York Times, on Elections in India's Largest State

May 24, 2012

Ashutosh Varshney, professor of Political Science and founding director of the Brown-India Initiative, commented on the Indian political landscape inThe New York Times.

Varshney spoke in the aftermath of the governing National Congress Party's defeat in the country's largest state, Uttar Pradesh.

“It’s clearly a bad election for the Congress,” said Ashutosh Varshney, a political scientist at Brown University. Uttar Pradesh “was the biggest prize, but no one expected Congress to win. Congress improved its tally, but that was not enough.”
