Lost Time, Money, and Opportunities: The Educational Costs of Sexual Assault

How does sexual assault impact students’ academic achievement and future trajectories? Drawing on interviews with rape survivors and rape crisis service providers, this talk will examine a range of challenges faced by student survivors and will consider how campus communities can better meet their needs. The impact of current federal policy and the implications for institutional responses will also be explored.

Rebecca Loya is a post-doctoral research associate at the Taubman Center for Public Policy at Brown. esearch interests include racial and gender income and wealth inequalities, asset-based poverty alleviation strategies and work support policies for low-income families. Her current research examines the role of sexual violence in creating economic disadvantage and the protective effects of financial assets and social capital.
