The Feminist Backlash to Brazil's Impeachment Fallout

After the lower house vote to impeach President Rousseff, Veja magazine, Brazil’s right-leaning mainstream media outlet, published a profile spread featuring Vice President Michael Temer's wife Marcela. The piece portraying the prospective First Lady as "beautiful, maidenlike, and a housewife" has been widely criticized for promoting a patriarchal image of a "model woman." In response to the Veja magazine publishing, Brazil's social media outlets have erupted with images mocking the idea of the "beautiful, maidenlike, and a housewife" woman. The cultural backlash has highlighted the discussion surrounding sexism as a factor in President Rousseff's impeachment process by Brazil's predominantly male congress.
