Bianca Fadel

Bianca Fadel is currently a doctoral researcher in the Centre for International Development at Northumbria University, United Kingdom. Her current project explores the roles of local volunteers in promoting sustainable development during protracted crises in the global South, particularly looking at the case of Burundi to understand the multiple variables that shape their work towards durable solutions. She holds a M.A in Humanitarian Action and a B.A in International Relations. As part of the Joint European Master’s Programme in International Humanitarian Action, her academic research focused on the importance of networks and the role of non-traditional actors in determining the current state of humanitarian issues, with a case study on Brazil.
Following her M.A, Fadel worked as Advisor at the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), supporting the Humanitarian Cooperation Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil. As focal point for humanitarian affairs, Fadel actively worked in bilateral and multilateral relations of the Brazilian humanitarian diplomacy strategy. In that position, she developed methodologies for systematisation and monitoring of the department’s humanitarian initiatives and also contributed to the planning and follow up of projects in the areas of food security and nutrition, poverty eradication and rural inclusion, including the international framework of the Brazilian National Plan of Food Security and Nutrition. Previously, Fadel also assumed leadership positions as volunteer at the Brazilian Red Cross, implementing local projects focused on youth and community engagement.
