Cross-disciplinary Discussions of Translation
“Translation Across Disciplines” highlights cross-disciplinary interest in the field of translation, modern languages and the humanities. The conference is a collaborative event between the following departments and centers at Brown University -- Comparative Literature, East Asian Studies, French Studies, German Studies, Hispanic Studies, Italian Studies, Literary Arts, Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, Slavic Studies, Middle East Studies and the Center for Language Studies.
Please join us as we bring together scholars and practitioners from various disciplines and from different parts of the world to learn about and from each other’s work. Panelists and presenters will investigate the various ways by which linguistic exchange occurs in society and across societies. Sessions will focus on literary translation, professional translation, experimental translation, the pedagogy of translation and the politics of interpreting.

Ann Goldstein is a former editor at The New Yorker. She has translated works by more than twenty writers, among them Primo Levi, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Italo Calvino, and Alessandro Baricco. She is the editor of the Complete Works of Primo Levi in English. She is also the translator of Elena Ferrante’s My Brilliant Friend and other novels in the Neapolitan series. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and has received awards from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
