We are delighted to announce that, effective July 1, 2019, the Middle East Studies program will turn into a new Center (CMES) at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown. The Center’s mission is to promote research, teaching, and public engagement on key issues of the Middle East in a historically and culturally grounded manner. Its coverage includes all time periods—from antiquity to contemporary geopolitics—and an expansive geographical imagination in which the Middle East is both a region with changing boundaries and a conceptual entity as part of global discourses.

Housed at 280 Brook street, the Center is aligned with Watson’s mission to encourage innovative thinking pertaining to development, security, and governance. It will also work closely with departments in the arts, humanities, and the social sciences, and collaborative units such as the Center for Language Studies, the Cogut Institute for the Humanities, the Brown Arts Initiative, and the Pembroke Center. Please stay tuned for more details forthcoming in Fall 2019.
