Professor Brummett is a Visiting Professor in the History Department and Middle East Studies. Initially interested in the field of comparative civilizations, Brummett gravitated towards Ottoman Studies as a student at the University of Chicago. Her work focuses largely on cross-cultural rhetorics, exploring image and narrative as rhetorics that “transcend time and space”. Her latest book explores the Ottomans through maps, unpacking the relationship between Muslims and Christians in the 16th and 17th century through exploring the land and sea spaces of the Empire. Other work has explored image and imperialism in the Ottoman revolutionary press in the early 20thcentury, through analyzing cartoons.
