Hamid El-Bashir Ibrahim is a Sudanese scholar, social anthropologist academician, researcher, human rights and political activist with a strong pro-democracy orientation. Hamid is also a columnist with regular and significant contribution to the hot and current issues in Sudan particularly on civil wars, unequal development, fundamentalism and human rights violations. At present he is a senior official at the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) currently holding the position of Country Representative for the organization in Eritrea, in East Africa.

He was born and raised in the multi-cultural context of South Kordofan, the Nuba Mountains region in Sudan where a civil war is currently ongoing that started immediately after and in conjunction with the separation of South Sudan in early July 2011. He has a PhD in social anthropology from the University of Connecticut (1988), and has published extensively on issues of peace building, development, marginalization and civil war in Sudan. Prior to joining UNICEF Dr. El-Bashir taught at the University of Khartoum, Ahfad University for Women and Cairo University, Khartoum Branch in Sudan (1988-95).
