In the late 1970s, residents of Rio de Janeiro’s favelas—neighborhoods of self-built housing on disputed property—mobilized to end the practice of favela eradication and to secure a place for themselves in the city. Their struggle helped bring Brazil’s military dictatorship to an end. The complex legacy of their movement continues to shape life in the Marvelous City.
