Art at Watson presents “Silenced Voices,” an exhibition by Cuban artist Raphael Díaz, from Thursday, March 8, 2018, to Thursday, May 31, 2018, at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, 111 Thayer Street, 3rd floor, Providence, Rhode Island.
Raphael Díaz started painting and writing poetry at the age of nine. He was captivated by "investigating life through colors and shapes," and the ways in which "people express their inner beauty and turmoil... to overcome the adversity of one’s existence." Raphael speaks of his studio as his sanctuary, where "the true nature of [his] experiences are exposed." This exhibition is an exploration and a reflection of the diverse cultures that have affected Raphael's life. Raphael Díaz, is an ESL teacher for the Providence Public Schools. He holds degrees from Brown University and the University of Rhode Island. Raphael has exhibited his paintings and participated in conferences throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. His work can be found in public and private collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in the Dominican Republic, the Ministry of Commerce and Development in Mexico City, the University of Bayamón in Puerto Rico, the Peruvian-Japanese Cultural Center in Lima, the Rotary of La Palma in Quillota, Chile, and the Gran Canaria Airport in Las Palmas, Spain.
