Majumdar

Shruti Majumdar is employed by the World Bank’s Demand for Good Governance team in the Social Development anchor, where her work focuses on social accountability, community-driven development and context-driven policy interventions. She received her PhD from the Department of Sociology in May 2012. Her research focuses on how the urban poor in India make claims on the local state when it comes to two of the scarcest resources in the country – water and land. Her findings are based on a year of ethnographic fieldwork in four of the largest slums in Calcutta, and her fieldwork was funded by the Brown University Dissertation Fellowship, GPD’s Summer Fieldwork Grants and the National Science Foundation (NSF) Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant.
