Graduate Program in Development

A PhD With a Difference

The Graduate Program in Development (GPD) is an interdisciplinary initiative sponsored by Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs. GPD was generally supported by an IGERT (Integrated Graduate Education Research and Training) grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) between 2010 and 2016.

Research

Brown has a long tradition of research in the area of development and inequality. In the social sciences, over 35 faculty have research interests in this area. GPD is committed to supporting and promoting a wide range of research initiatives by faculty, students, and our partner institutions in development and inequality.

Admissions & Funding

Any PhD student at Brown can participate in GPD activities, including courses, workshops and specialized training modules. Students who become trainees are eligible for summer research grants and have opportunities to participate in research projects sponsored by GPD faculty and our program partners in the global south.
