Open only to potential Middle East Studies concentrators.

Refreshments provided. 

Middle East Studies concentrators will share their experiences conducting research and working at internships in or focused on the Middle East. This event is a an opportunity for first and second year students interested in concentrating in Middle East Studies to meet current concentrators and hear about research funding, career assistance, and the many other ways that Middle East Studies extends beyond the classroom.

Research

  • Alex Abuaita ’18 is researching the devolution of the education system in Egypt during the Mubarak era. He will talk about how to conduct interdisciplinary research as an undergraduate including doing fieldwork in the Middle East.
  • Benjamin Gladstone ‘18 studied Arabic in Jordan on a Critical Language Scholarship in the summer of 2016, and traveled to Israel in January of this year to conduct archival research for his senior thesis, which focuses on Yemeni Jewish migration to Israel.

Internships

  • Alexander Samaha '18.5 took leave from Brown his junior fall and interned in Beirut, Lebanon at the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies, conducting research on the Syrian refugee crises, Middle Eastern governance, and Lebanese electoral reform. 
  • Kelley Tacket ‘20 is interning with the Smithsonian Cultural Rescue Initiative (with the Penn Cultural Heritage Center), doing research and compiling data about cultural heritage sites at risk in Syria and Tunisia to better understand the role(s) destruction of these sites plays in ongoing conflicts.
  • Ryan Saadeh ‘20 was a programs intern at the Middle East Institute, where he helped organize panels, conferences, and lectures on current Middle Eastern politics.
