Meeting #3 – Turkey, the United States, and the War on Terror
Reading | Perin A. Gurel, The Limits of Westernization: A Cultural History of America in Turkey (New York: Columbia University Press, 2017)
The Turkish Studies Reading Group seeks to provide a space for critical, interdisciplinary discussion about contemporary Turkey on the Brown campus. Each session will be devoted to discussing a recent monograph on Turkey. Themes this semester include: authoritarianism; modernization, infrastructure, and the Cold War; as well as Turkey and the War on Terror. Participants are expected to get copies of the books for themselves and are encouraged to try to read the whole text prior to the scheduled meetings.
We seek to create a space where people with diverse scholarly and personal interests in Turkey can gather for engaged conversation. We particularly welcome people who are interested in Turkey, but for whom Turkey is not necessarily their area of primary research. Our group is open to all members of the Brown community.
