MES Research Travel Award recipient Anil Askin goes abroad for archival research

January 25, 2019

As one of the recipients of the Middle East Studies Research Travel Award for the fall 2018 cycle, PhD student in history Anil Askin traveled to Turkey to do research both on non-Western histories of 19th century British, Spanish, and French capitalism in order to discuss the bureaucratic modes of knowledge production and understanding of colonial geographies through the Ottoman consular networks across Europe and North America.  His other research project is in drawing connections between the Ottoman and Spanish Empires through the history of merino sheep breeding in Western Anatolia, in order to discuss extraterritoriality from global and political-economic perspectives.
