In a book review in the New York Times, Institute Professor Catherine Lutz describes a new biography of President Obama’s mother as a “richly researched, unsentimental book” about an anthropologist, independent thinker and, like her son, community organizer. A Singular Woman (Penguin Group), by Janny Scott, reflects more on Ann Dunham herself than on her relationship with her son, reports Lutz, who is also an anthropologist. Still, President Obama delivers some of the book's most moving passages, crediting her for his sense of idealism.
