As China and its neighbors continue territorial wrangling in the South China Sea, Institute Visiting Associate Professor Lyle Goldstein tells the New York Times of a “dangerous escalation of tensions” since last summer.
Since then, “there has been an increase in hawkish declarations by Chinese naval leaders,” says Goldstein. In its actions, China nevertheless has continued to exercise caution, he says.
Goldstein is director of the China Maritime Studies Institute at the US Naval War College, and he is teaching a course on “China and the World” this semester at Brown.
