While India witnessed a democratic spectacle where three incumbents lost their positions during state elections, political scientist Ashutosh Varshney discusses the gaps in liberal ideology between elections citing the lynching of a Muslim man accused of eating beef. "India’s democracy is going through an especially troubling period of its fundamentally paradoxical character. It continues to shine electorally, but its attack on liberal freedoms between elections is a cause of great concern," Varshney wrote.
