Study on climate change’s impact on abandoned U.S. military base sparks debate in Greenland and Denmark

October 14, 2016 News from Brown

A research study in which Jeff Colgan is a co-author, found that climate change is causing the Greenland Ice Sheet to melt and could potentially expose radioactive waste at Camp Century, an abandoned U.S. military base. "Since the camp was decommissioned, Jeff Colgan said, 'falling snow has buried the camp roughly 115 feet further underneath the ice.' Climatic projections, however, 'predict increased surface melting in northwestern Greenland through 2100,' according to the study."
