Spring 2023 events at Watson

The Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs and its centers, institutes and programs have a dynamic roster of thought-provoking events planned for the spring semester.

Speakers include a wide range of experts who will discuss the historic events and current issues societies are grappling with across the globe. Below are some highlights of what’s to come.

Feb. 24: The Saxena Center for Contemporary South Asia presents “Planning Bureaucracy and its Encroachments: The Making of Islamabad as a Master-planned City,” featuring Faiza Moatasim, Assistant Professor of Architecture in Urbanism and Urban Design, University of Southern California School of Architecture.

Feb. 24: The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies presents “Rethinking the Dynamic Interplay of Migration, Race, and Ethnicity in the Caribbean and Latin America: A Literary Event,” featuring Angie Cruz, Fred D'Aguiar, Francisco Goldman, Shara McCallum, Tiphanie Yanique and Javier Zamora.

Feb. 28: The Rhodes Center for International Economics and Finance presents “Free Market: The History of an Idea,” featuring Jacob Soll, University Professor and Professor of Philosophy, History, and Accounting, University of Southern California.

March 2: The Military Fellows Speaker Series presents “Wings of Hope: Creating an Afghan Evacuee Safehaven,” featuring Lt. Col. Jonathan Bott, Visiting Scholar in International and Public Affairs.

March 2: The Climate Solutions Lab presents “Making Climate Policy: The Inflation Reduction Act,” featuring Leah Stokes, Anton Vonk Associate Professor of Environmental Politics, Department of Political Science, University of California Santa Barbara.

March 3: The Rhodes Center for International Economics and Finance presents “Global Discord: Values and Power in a Fractured World Order,” featuring Sir Paul Tucker, Research Fellow, Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government, Harvard Kennedy School.

March 9: The Taubman Center for American Politics and Policy presents the 2023 Alexander Meiklejohn Lecture, “Schooling Free Speech,” featuring Justin Driver '97, Robert R. Slaughter Professor of Law and Counselor to the Dean, Yale Law School.

March 15: The China Initiative presents “Dictatorship and Information: Authoritarian Regime Resilience in Communist Europe and China,” featuring Martin Dimitrov, Professor of Political Science, Tulane University.

March 17: The Center for Middle East Studies presents “Narratives of Exile and Migration: Kurdish Women's Political Struggles,” featuring Nisa Göksel, Assistant Professor of Sociology, School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Arizona State University.

April 6: The Center for Middle East Studies presents “Access to Abortion in the Middle East and North Africa,” featuring Samia Al Nagar, Independent Researcher, Zeina Fathallah, American University of Beirut and Angel Foster, University of Ottawa.

April 27: The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies presents “Opening for Window on Memory, An Exhibit by Jasmine Thomas-Girvan,” a conversation with the artist moderated by CLACS Director Patsy Lewis, reception and exhibit viewing at the Cohen Gallery, 154 Angell Street.
