Patricia Herlihy is Professor Emerita from Brown University (1986-2001) and from Emmanuel College, Boston (2006-2009) where she held the Louise Doherty Wyant Professorship.  She is currently Adjunct Professor, Watson Institute for International Studies, an Associate of Harvard’s Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies and the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute.  She was Director of the International Relations Program at Brown University for six years. She taught Russian, Ukrainian, Soviet and European history for over 45 years and has lived in and visited Russia and Ukraine many times. She received her B.A. degree from the University of California, Berkeley and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.


She is currently writing a biography of Eugene Schuyler (1840-90), an American diplomat who served in Russia, Turkey, England, Italy, Romania, Greece, and Egypt.  He was the first American expert in the Russian language, literature, and history. He wrote a two-volume history of Peter the Great, a two-volume description of his witnessing of the conquest of Central Asia by Russia and an analysis of Russian expansion, a book on American Diplomacy, and many reports, articles, and even fiction. He wrote the Bulgarian Constitution among other accomplishments in brief but colorful career.

She is also researching and writing about the impact of Russia’s alcoholism problem on demography, politics, family life, and security.  She continues to write articles about the city of Odessa and op-eds concerning events in Russia and Ukraine.
