Watson Professors Receive Ford Foundation Grant

September 24, 2018

Professors Ashutosh Varshney and Patrick Heller recently received a Ford Foundation grant for $200,000 for their ongoing project on Citizenship and Urban Governance in India.

With the rapid growth of population in cities across India, the project focuses on the governance of these places and the critical implications for ensuring quality of life for all. The Janaagraha-Brown Citizenship Index (JB-CI) was created in 2012 as a collaboration between scholars and practitioners in an attempt to create a powerful tool to aid discussion in the future. Currently, the grant allows them to do research in several Indian cities, including Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Kochi, but will extend to northern and eastern cities in the future. In India, the project is based in Bangalore at the Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy.
