Conference ─ BRICS Neoliberalism: Past and Future?

BRICS Neoliberalism Past and Future Conference April 23 24 2022

Saturday, April 23 –
Sunday, April 24, 2022

In person in the Joukowsky Forum, 111 Thayer Street, or watch live on Watson's YouTube Channel: Day 1 and Day 2.

This conference is open to Brown University faculty, students and researchers, registration is required.

This workshop stems from the impression that the latest round of discussions about the fate of neoliberalism since the outbreak of the pandemic has remained focused around the “neoliberal heartlands” of the North Atlantic and left much of the rest of the world in shadow. This workshop hopes to redress the lacuna through both historical and contemporary perspectives on what might loosely be called BRICS Neoliberalism, or the phenomenon of neoliberal thought and practice in the major economies beyond the North Atlantic core. The topic seems especially relevant as the very question of the applicability or utility of the term "neoliberalism" to define the last forty years of policy choices across the world remains in dispute. We are keen to open a discussion about new concepts and categories to make better sense of the recent past and present of international political economy, especially at a moment when U.S. economic dominance faces challenges unprecedented in the postwar era.
