Prof Varshney in the Indian Express: The New Riots

In his April 24, 2022 Indian Express column, "The Difference This Time," Ashutosh Varshney compares the new episodes of communal violence with the vast dataset on communal violence (1950-95) which was used in his book on HIndu-Muslim relations, Ethnic Confilict and Civic Life. In drawing the parallels and differences, Varshney concludes that the changing role of the state constitutes the greatest difference.
