Brown International Advanced Research Institutes

History

Since 2009, the Brown International Advanced Research Institutes (BIARI) have convened for two weeks each June at Brown University. Every year, BIARI hosts well over 100 young faculty and practitioners from some 50 countries around the world to intensively explore the most pressing global challenges, from climate change to HIV to humanitarianism and development to ethnic conflict and inequality. Led by a small team of Brown faculty, with participation by other world renowned faculty, since 2009 the Institutes have brought together the rising stars in a range of disciplines, fostered discussion and debate among the participants, and spurred new global collaborations, conferences, and publications.

From the beginning, BIARI has been supported through a generous commitment from Santander Universities and Brown University, and participants in most cases receive full funding for airfare, housing, and other expenses during the two week Institutes. With resources for BIARI now guaranteed through June 2018, the next years will also see BIARI taken worldwide. Please contact the director for details.

Each year BIARI receives over 1,000 applications, and after nine years there are over 1,300 BIARI alumni in over 120 countries around the world, working together to promote scholarship and cooperation aimed at resolving the major global problems of our day.
