On April 10th and 11th, the Stone Initiative hosted Professor David Lay Williams. Professor Williams gave a public talk on his recently published book The Greatest of All Plagues: How Economic Inequality Shaped Political Thought from Plato to Marx (Princeton University Press, 2024). In his talk, moderated by Professor Alex Gourevitch, Professor Williams explained how Plato described economic inequality as a source of political instability and a corrupter of character and soul. Williams explored the societal problems generated by what Plato called “the greatest of all plagues,” and examined how Plato's understanding of economic inequality offers valuable insights to better understand and tackle extreme wealth inequality today. In addition to his public talk, Professor Williams had lunch with this year's cohort of Stone Undergraduate Fellows.
