Breaking Out of the Academy: How to Write Opinion Pieces for the Mainstream Press

Stephen Kinzer, author of many op-ed commentaries and an award-winning journalist for the New York Times and the Boston Globe, will offer tips on how to write short, effective advocacy articles for the non-academic press and strategies on getting quality press outlets to publish them. Kinzer will also give a brief overview of the Watson Institute's program aimed at helping faculty members write commentaries for newspaper op-ed pages and world affairs web sites. Both faculty and students are welcome at this talk.

Stephen Kinzer spent more than 20 years working for the New York Times, most of it as a foreign correspondent. He reported from more than 50 countries on five continents. Since leaving the Times, Kinzer has taught journalism, political science and international relations at Northwestern and Boston University. He writes a world affairs column for the Boston Globe and is a senior fellow at the Watson Institute.
