Martín Guzmán became Minister for the Economy of Argentina in December 2019. He was immediately thrust into the international spotlight for boldly restructuring Argentina’s debt, even before COVID arrived. Minister Guzman successfully utilized collective action clauses in these debt contracts, and worked with the IMF to establish what an ‘acceptable’ level of repayment should be, bringing creditors’ demands in line with what Argentina can actually afford. Introduced by Rhodes Center Benefactor and Brown Alum William Rhodes ’57, Minister Guzman discusses these events, and how they will shape Argentina’s program for recovery and sustainable economic growth that addresses both short term vulnerabilities and long term structural challenges."
