#Resistência: Contemporary AfroBrazilian Literature as Resistance

Thursday, April 15, 2021

3:00pm – 4:30pm

Register here to attend the webinar.

We will hold a roundtable discussion with contemporary Brazilian writers about contemporary AfroBrazilian literature (and culture more generally) as a site of resistance. Prof. Leila Lehnen (Brown U) and Leonora Paula (Michigan State U) will lead a discussion with AfroBrazilian writers:

- Mel Adún

- Sacolinha

- Lívia Natália

- Jeferson Tenório

The panel will broach questions such as:

- Does AfroBrazilian literature functions as a site of resistance?

- How do these writers understand (both individually and collectively) culture as a form of resistance?

- Can literature offer a sense of futurity, whether by claiming space for AfroBrazilian culture and identity or specifically broaching Afro-Futurist themes and topics.
