Brazil Fifty Years after the 1964 Military Coup d’État: The Pursuit of Democracy and Justice Continues will take place four days after the release of the Truth Commission’s final report. The International Symposium will be a privileged opportunity to examine the history and legacy of the Brazilian military regime (1964-85). Scholars and legal experts from Brazil and the United States will join Israeli specialists on Latin America to discuss: (1) the nature of the regime; (2) resistance and exile; (3) relations between Brazil, Israel, and the Brazilian Jewish community during this period; (4) the search for truth and justice in the transition to democratic rule; (5) the consolidation of democracy in Brazil over the last three decades; and (6) the legacy of the dictatorship, the rightwing, and anti-Semitism in Brazil today.

In a short piece, Skidmore exposes the vast landscape that is Brazil, and how Zirin's understanding of this country of continental dimensions is superficially rendered.

She points to the complexities of race relations and their intersection with class in Brazil to explore the presence of race and class in Brazil's political landscape.

The São Paulo Biennial Art Exhibit in 2014 focused, among other pressing social issues, on the marginalization of Brazil's low-income citizens of mixed-race, indigenous and/or African origins, including the oppression of indigenous people such as the Guarani. In an elite world of art that often excludes Brazil's larger population, this year's installation gave more visibility to neglected communities.

BRASA (The Brazilian Studies Association) will be moving its secretariat to Brown University in the summer of 2015 for a five-year term. BRASA's international symposium in London last month was a major success, and its future symposium will be held at Brown University March 31-April 2, 2016. A new high-tech Brown study explores the relationship between agricultural practices and deforestation in Mato Grosso, suggesting that the decrease in deforestation rates in the region stems more from a decline in arable and fertile land in the conserved parts of the forest than from government policy.
