VISUALIDADE E VIOLÊNCIA POLICIAL NAS AMÉRICAS / VISUALITY AND POLICE VIOLENCE IN THE AMERICAS

What role do new image technologies play in defending human rights in the context of a proliferation of security necropolitics? This talk focuses on personal videos and surveillance cameras and their ability to support the fight for justice in different forums. In addition to the Brazilian context, we will also briefly touch on images of police brutality in the United States and Mexico.

Felipe Polydoro is a professor of Communications in the Department of Organizational Communications at the University of Brasília (UnB). Currently, he is a visiting researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where he carries out comparative research on images of police violence in the United States, Mexico and Brazil. His current research is funded by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development of Brazil (CNPq). Polydoro completed his PhD at the University of São Paulo and is dedicated to research focused on Media and Visual Culture, with a focus on images and narratives of violence.
