Indigenous Community Wins Over Dam Project

Munduruku Peoples achieved a landmark victory for indigenous land rights in Brazil with the protection and demarcation of their 700 square-mile ancestral territory. The decision was announced by Brazil's National Foundation for the Indian (FUNAI) on April 19, 2016, and it follows a two year battle by the Munduruku People against the construction of the São Luiz do Tapajós dam. With the official demarcation of their territory, Munduruku Peoples are protected under existing Brazilian legislation from the construction of a hydro dam project that previously threatened to flood their lands on the Tapajós River basin.
