The number of people displaced in their own countries or crossing international borders as refugees has surpassed 80 million for the first time in decades, with hundreds of millions more directly or indirectly affected by conflict worldwide. In this conversation between Rosemary DiCarlo '69 AM'71 PhD'79, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, and Dr. Adam Levine, Director of the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Studies at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, we will explore the role of the United Nations in anticipating and preventing conflict, managing political crises, and negotiating and sustaining peace in increasingly complex emergency settings such as Syria, Yemen, and Ukraine. In particular, the conversation will touch on the importance of involving women in local peacebuilding efforts, and emerging issues such as the links between climate change and conflict and the use of digital tools for conflict prevention and mediation.
