Senior Policy Advisor for Governance at Oxfam America

Sarah Gardiner is a visiting scholar at Brown University's Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Studies at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs. Her research focuses on the impact of domestic immigration policy on foreign policy priorities in the areas of governance, human rights, humanitarian service delivery, and sustainable development.  She is a Senior Policy Advisor for Governance at Oxfam America. She began her career as a Foreign Service Office at the U.S. Department of State, serving tours in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire and Madrid, Spain. She has held several positions in the non-profit sector, including as Policy Director at Freedom for Immigrants, a national nonprofit dedicated to ending immigration detention. She is a current Security Fellow with the Truman National Security Project and co-chair of the Democracy and Human Rights working group of Foreign Policy for America's NextGen Initiative. In 2021, she was a Penn Kemble Fellow at the National Endowment for Democracy. She is a proud alumni of the Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship and holds degrees from Georgetown University and the John Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies.
