COVID-19 Vaccine Training for Health Care Workers

Overview

Building off the successful roll-out of our COVID-19 Training for Health Workers: Preparedness and Response training of trainers program, in December of 2020, CHRHS and Project HOPE partnered again to develop and implement a training curriculum to educate clinicians and frontline personnel on COVID-19 vaccines. Developed by faculty at Brown University, the one day virtual training course is designed to be deployed in low and middle-income country settings where Project HOPE and other responding organizations are working rapidly and sustainably to scale up local capacity for COVID-19 vaccine distribution. Following the World Health Organization’s COVID vaccines guidelines, the training provides critical knowledge about the different available vaccines through a blend of online learning modules, materials for in-person trainings, and direct support to health facilities. Participants also learn about the effectiveness and side effects of all the different COVID-19 vaccines, as well as how to overcome vaccine hesitancy and manage vaccine rollout.

The initial deployment of the training, which took place between February and June 2021, was done in partnership with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) in support of their vaccination strategy. Through this collaboration with Africa CDC and Project HOPE, the training has been provided to participants across 30 African countries. In addition to the African continent, our trainers have also implemented the training in Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. To date this training has been conducted to over 2,600 health care workers who have gone on to train an additional 2,200 health professionals across over 40 countries.

COVID-19 Vaccine eLearning Course

Our COVID-19 Vaccine Training for Health Care Workers training has also been converted and adapted into an online eLearning course through Disaster Ready. This self-paced course follows the World Health Organization’s guidelines and vaccination strategy to inform participants about proper vaccine storage, preparation, and administration. Those that engage with this online course are also trained on how to respond to questions and concerns raised by local populations.
