Aside from providing Rhode Island citizens with a web portal to view health insurance options and determine eligibility for federal premium assistance tax credits, state-based exchanges can also be a driver of change. HealthSource RI director Christine Ferguson will discuss how Rhode Island's health insurance exchange hopes to impact over all health care policy in the state by having an educated consumer base drive changes in plan design, delivery system and cost.
Christine Ferguson joined HealthSource RI, Rhode Island’s health benefits exchange, as its director in 2012. Prior to joining HealthSource RI, she served on the faculty of the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services. Ferguson has served as commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, director of the Rhode Island Department of Human Services, and counsel and deputy chief of staff to the late U.S. Senator John H. Chafee. She has expertise in the areas of Medicare, Medicaid, tax expenditures, public health and safety, obesity and chronic disease, maternal and child health, safety net providers and commercial insurance.
