As a protocol officer for the U.S. Department of State, Taubman Center alumna Jennifer Paolino researches and procures official gifts given to foreign government officials on behalf of the President, Vice President, Secretary of State and their spouses. Here she shares what it’s like to travel abroad with the President and the art of gift giving in the diplomatic realm.

Master of Public Affairs students Graham Sheridan '14 and Adolfo Bailon '14 will present results from their study of the Town of Narragansett’s vehicle maintenance program to the Narragansett Town Council on Monday, September 16 at 6:30 p.m. The second-year MPA students were commissioned by the Council to conduct the study this past summer.

Adjunct lecturer in public policy Elizabeth Burke Bryant will co-chair the university’s new TRI-Lab initiative. The first TRI-Lab, which stands for Teaching, Research, and Impact, begins during the 2013–2014 academic year.

Adjunct lecturer in public policy Richard Arenberg recently wrote an opinion piece for the Washington Post urging Harry Reid to "save the filibuster." Democrats have threatened to use a loophole in Senate rules -- the so-called "nuclear option" -- to dismantle the filibuster, which allows the minority party to stall legislation lacking a two-thirds majority.

Defending the Filibuster: The Soul of the Senate by Richard A. Arenberg and Robert B. Dove has been awarded the gold medal as the best political science book of the year (2012) by Foreword Reviews magazine. The award was announced at the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in Chicago.

Associate Professor of Political Science and Public Policy Wendy Schiller has co-authored (with Charles Stewart III) a paper recently published by the Brookings Institution: The 100th Anniversary of the 17th Amendment (Direct Election of Senators): A Promise Unfulfilled? The paper was published on the 100th annivesary of the adoption of the 17th Amendment as part of the Brookings Institute's Issues in Governance Studies series.

Marion Orr, director of Taubman Center, will be the keynote speaker at the 100th Annual Freedom Fund Breakfast of the Providence-Greater Rhode Island chapter of the NAACP set for 9 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at the Providence Marriott. This year's theme will be ""A Century in the Fight for Freedom."

Taubman Center Policy Solutions Challenge team Five Taubman policy students will compete in Policy Solutions Challenge USA on February 15 and 16, 2013 at the University of Delaware’s School of Public Policy and Administration. The team -- Matthew McCabe MPP ’14, Kelsey Sherman MPP ’14, Amber Ma MPA ’14, Gayatri Sahgal MPP ’14, and Dana Schwartz PPAI ’15 -- has prepared a policy brief on addressing childhood obesity in U.S.

Aaron Hertzberg, a current student in the Taubman Center’s master of public affairs program, has been named the executive director of the Pawtucket Foundation, a nonprofit organization that advocates for downtown, riverfront and transportation improvements for the city of Pawtucket. Hertzberg, who had been program director at the local nonprofit since 2008, was promoted to the executive director position by the organization’s board of directors this month.

Marion Orr, director of the Taubman Center for Public Policy, co-authored a paper in the January 2013 issue of Urban Affairs Review about racial politics and the election of Providence Mayor Angel Taveras. “Anxieties of an Ethnic Transition” examines how Providence voters assessed the future of the city in the midst of an economic downturn following the election of the first Latino mayor.

The Taubman Center received national exposure on C-SPAN, which broadcast the Center's December 10, 2012 luncheon lecture. Michael Dimock, Associate Director of Research, Pew Research Center presented "Polling and the 2012 Presidential Election," a look back at the issues, events and values that shaped the 2012 presidential election.
