Elizabeth Burke Bryant, policy professor and executive director of Rhode Island Kids Count, recently presented a new Kids Count report that states 1,450 Rhode Island children under the age of 6 were neglected or abused in fiscal 2015. "We're concerned about all children in the child welfare system," she said, but younger children "who are abused and neglected need the system to respond quickly to meet their needs in the best and safest way possible."

Wendy Schiller, chair and professor of political science, comments on the lack of involvement from corporations following Donald Trump's call to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. “Let’s say you do a lot of business in the Southeast. The first primary in South Carolina isn’t until February, so why not wait and see how he does?” she said in a phone interview. “Companies still have some time before they have to really go out on a limb and denounce Trump.”

Wendy Schiller, professor and chair of political science, gave remarks at a panel Saturday afternoon that focused on efforts to reform campaign finance. Companies and organizations, she said, are “looking to buy something” from the politicians they spend on, such as policy changes. If those pushing for campaign finance reform connected the dots for voters and showed them how the companies that make contributions reap benefits, voters would become more engaged, she said.

Sharma is the founder of FORCE, an New Delhi-based nonprofit that works on issues of water security and sanitation, civic engagement, and sustainable development.

Nina Totenberg, award-winning legal correspondent for National Public Radio, recently spoke about the Supreme Court, reflecting on forty years of reporting on the pinnacle of the American legal system. Presented by the Taubman Center for American Politics and Policy, the October 2015 event in De Ciccio Auditorium was this year’s Alexander Meiklejohn Lecture, “in honor of the first amendment, and in honor of all the people who bring it to life in their daily work,” said James Morone, director of the Taubman Center.

Stephen Kinzer, foreign affairs columnist for the Boston Globe, recently presented “Breaking Out of the Academy: How to Write Opinion Pieces for the Mainstream Press,” his tips on writing short-form for those in the Ivory tower. Kinzer, a senior fellow at Brown’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, addressed a packed room of students and faculty at the Taubman Center for American Politics and Policy, which sponsored the late-September talk.

On September 17, the Taubman Center for American Politics and Policy presented Charles Blow, a New York Times op-ed columnist who writes weekly on issues including race relations, social justice, gender equity, and presidential politics. Blow was this year’s John Hazen White, Sr. lecturer. Blow presented his talk, titled “The New Civil Rights Movement,” to a sold-out crowd at the Salomon Center, and received two standing ovations after his speech and Q&A session.

The new Noah Krieger Internship Award provides funding for a policy student who is particularly interested in public service to pursue an unpaid summer internship. This year’s awardee, Taylor Ross '17 (above, with Taubman Center Director James Morone), is in Washington, DC this summer working at the U.S. Department of Education in the office of academic improvement. She will be working within the High School Group on an initiative to grant AP test fee waivers to disadvantaged students.

The Taubman Center hosted the first Rhode Island Family Impact Seminar, “Economic Well-Being of Rhode Island Families: The Promise and Practice of Two-Generation Approaches” in March. The seminar, attended by Rhode Island state legislators and local policy makers, was organized by public policy professors Valerie Cooley and Kenneth Wong and held at the Rhode Island State House. Rhode Island state senator Louis DiPalma praised Cooley and Wong for their work in organizing the seminar.

One of the most effective tools to influence public opinion and ultimately, public policy, is the opinion page of major newspapers. Steve Cohen ’75 — a lawyer with a background in publishing and teaching — has had remarkable success in writing opinion pieces for the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. Over the past two years, Cohen has placed ten opinion pieces on education, national defense, and law in those two publications. Last semester, he shared insider tips for translating policy ideas to publication-worthy opinion pieces.

“A Providence Stadium: Strike-out or Home Run,” a public forum to discuss the pros and cons of building a 10,000-seat minor league ballpark in Providence, drew a filled-to-capacity crowd to Friedman Auditorium on June 9. The forum, jointly sponsored by the Taubman Center and Rhode Island Public Radio, featured a panel discussing the Pawtucket Red Sox’s proposed relocation from their current home in Pawtucket to a new riverfront stadium to be built in Providence’s Jewelry District. Political reporter Ian Donnis moderated the discussion.
